One of our top meals ever.

Our first AdVINEture to northern Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region was (unsurprisingly) inspired by wine. We were far from disappointed in that department but what did surprise us was just how much we would enjoy the culinary scene. The standout meal for us (among several) was at La Subida Sirk Trattoria al Cacciatore, a Michelin star country tavern owned by the Sirk family that beckons travellers with promises of authentic flavours, warm hospitality, and a dash of innovation.

The Trattoria was established in 1960 by Josko and Loredana Sirk as a family-run multi-course restaurant to complement their Inn and Osteria.

The family’s commitment to preserving their heritage is evident in every aspect of the restaurant, from the decor that exudes rustic charm, to the carefully curated menu that pays homage to the flavors of the region.

Today while Josko’s daughter Tanja and her brother are the current faces of the restaurant, Tanja’s husband Alessandro Gavagna is the chef, and several family members remain involved. When we arrived and were greeted with appetizers before lunch, it was their mother Loredana carving the prosciutto from the hind leg of a pig.

Because of its location on a hillside overlooking rolling vineyards and quaint villages of Friuli, La Subida offers a view that is wonderfully intimate and serene.

A serene and intimate setting.

The trattoria is a retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life, inviting guests to relax and savour the experience. The traditional stone walls, wooden beams, and cozy seating create an ambiance that transports diners to a simpler time, where meals were a celebration of life and community, and no one was in any rush to be anywhere else.

At the heart of La Subida’s culinary philosophy lies a deep respect for local ingredients and time-honored recipes. They transform simple, seasonal ingredients into masterpieces that celebrate the region’s gastronomic heritage. From hand made pasta and polenta to succulent roasts, each dish is a reflection of the Sirk family’s dedication to showcasing the genuine essence of Friulian cuisine.

Our multi-course lunch at La Subida featured wines perfectly paired from their carefully curated wine list. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is renowned for its exceptional wines, and the trattoria proudly highlights the best of the region. From crisp white wines to robust reds, the wine list offers a diverse selection that perfectly complements the flavors of the dishes. The staff’s knowledge and enthusiasm for local wines elevate the dining experience, guiding guests through the region’s vinicultural treasures.

Dining at La Subida Sirk Trattoria al Cacciatore is more than just a meal; it’s an immersion into the heart and soul of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
