Australia2006 Molly Dooker Blue-Eyed Boy Shiraz

It is difficult to do a proper tasting note on a wine like this. TNs need to be objective evaluations of a wine’s quality, not just a recounting of the tasters personal preferences. This behemoth of a wine had tons of super-ripe flavor (blackberries and blueberries) and a nose to match. Definitely striving for a push the envelope style, it came across as out of balance to us. The fruit screamed so loudly you could not pick up any subtle nuances or complexity. The body was so full that it resembled a blueberry milkshake. And there was a quite notable heat from the alcohol. Simply too much for us, but we can see other palates taking a different view, if they like that style.

Barossa Valley2001 E&E Black Pepper Shiraz

A classic full bodied Aussie Shiraz where time in the cellar has made it smooth and plush, even elegant–not a term we often use with this style of wine! Drinking beautifully it is balanced and well structured revealing lots of blackberry, black cherry, and some plum, backed with black pepper, earth and a hint of clove. A powerful and wonderfully complex wine that paired perfectly with oven roasted lamb. We would recommend drinking now although it wasn’t breaking down…we just can’t imagine this getting any better.

Bottle with glass of Killibinbin Shiraz2001 Killibinbin Shiraz

A delightful aged Shiraz with lots of dark fruits. Black cherry and bramble berry are delivered in a  well balanced, medium bodied style. It has a good mouthfeel with just the right amount of texture; round without being soft. The tannins are fully resolved and there are some secondary characteristics of olive and woodsy notes that join the blackberry to add interest and complexity, though this wine is mostly about the fruit. It finishes just slightly hot. Drink now!

EEshirazcandel2002 Barossa Valley Estate E & E Black Pepper Shiraz

Still inky dark in colour. Aromas rise up from the glass that are an intoxicating mix of black fruit, spices and a hint of oak. Flavours of black cherry, blackberry and raspberry receive additional complexity from the black pepper and other spices. Medium body and smooth, this is miles away from the stereotypical Barossa bruiser. Beautifully balanced and elegant, this is a great food wine. Raspberry and a slight piquant note form the long finish. Delicious!

Excellent

South Australia2003 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz

A big plush wine as you would expect but its complexity kept it well in balance. It showed lots of fruit on the nose and palate, particularly blackberry and plum but also had secondary notes of vanilla and spice. At 12 years old, drinking nicely and likely still has some time in the cellar.
