Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa.
Few places in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley strike the balance quite as well as Summerland. Between Penticton’s high-season momentum and the increasingly polished profile of Oliver, it remains comparatively quieter, with a character that feels a little more grounded.
That balance is part of the appeal. And it’s what makes Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa such an ideal base from which to experience this part of the region.
Positioned directly on Okanagan Lake, the resort sits within easy reach of the south Okanagan’s major wine corridors while remaining removed from their busiest edges.

Those lakeside sunrises.
Penticton is 15 minutes south and Bottleneck Drive begins almost immediately inland. In practical terms, it allows visitors to move easily between winery appointments, restaurants, and the lake without spending the better part of the day in the car or feeling rushed from one stop to the next.
That proximity matters because Summerland’s wine scene continues to evolve in meaningful ways. Producers such as Haywire Winery and Solvero Wines are helping establish the area as one of the more compelling sub-regions in BC wine. Tasting experiences here still tend to feel direct and conversational rather than highly managed.

Taking full advantage of the lake.
The reality, however, is that accommodation options haven’t expanded at the same pace as the region’s tourism and wine industries. In that context, Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa fills an increasingly important role.
The property itself understands its setting well. Rather than competing with the lake, it takes full advantage of it. Suites are generously scaled, with full kitchens, living areas, and balconies that encourage guests to spend time in the room rather than simply use it as a place to sleep between reservations.
Service follows a similar philosophy. The tone is attentive without being intrusive. What stood out most was the consistency of the hospitality across the entire resort. From the front desk team and housekeeping staff to the servers in the restaurants, every interaction felt genuinely warm and professional.
Dining is another area where the resort reflects a strong sense of place.

Breakfast care of SWR Bistro.
The casual SWR Bistro is an essential part of the stay, showcasing the Okanagan’s agricultural abundance through seasonal menus that take advantage of the region’s farms, orchards, vineyards, and nearby producers.
It’s where mornings begin in earnest: house-made pastries, proper coffee, and breakfasts made fresh. It doubles as an easy lunch stop or a mid-day reset between winery visits.
In a region where quick, reliable food options can still be inconsistent outside major centres, that convenience becomes more valuable than it sounds. One particularly smart touch: guests can arrange to have a charcuterie board waiting in their suite on arrival; a small detail, but one that immediately shifts the tone of a travel day.

Highly recommend pre-ordering a charcuterie plate upon arrival!
Shaughnessy’s Cove offers a relaxed waterfront dining experience that complements the resort’s wine-country setting. Its gastropub-style menu takes advantage of the Okanagan’s local and natural bounty, incorporating fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from around the valley. Combined with its waterfront setting and relaxed atmosphere, it provides an easy option for guests looking to settle in for the evening without leaving the property.
The lake, meanwhile, is not ornamental here. It actively shapes the rhythm of the stay. From the marina and private beach to the pool deck and guest balconies, the water remains a constant visual anchor.

Easy access to the renown Kettle Valley Rail Trail.
What the resort ultimately offers is flexibility. It works equally well as a base for exploring the valley or as a place to remain largely still for several days. Guests can spend mornings on Bottleneck Drive, afternoons cycling sections of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, and evenings back at the water, or choose not to build much of an itinerary at all.
That option increasingly feels like a luxury in the Okanagan.
As parts of the valley become more crowded, more expensive, and more self-conscious in their presentation, places like Summerland are attracting attention for all the right reasons: accessibility, relative calm, and a wine culture that still feels connected to the people producing it.
For travellers looking to experience the Okanagan Valley without being fully absorbed by its busiest corridors, it makes a convincing case for staying slightly outside the centre of things. In Summerland, that distance is precisely the point.
