Our first AdVINEture to northern Italy’s Friuli Venezia-Giulia region and Istria in northern Croatia revealed a wine traveller’s paradise. The countryside is beautiful and as of now quite unspoiled by tourists. The culinary scene is top notch with some outstanding restaurants, (several with Michelin stars) and the cuisine shows the diversity of the many countries that have influenced both regions. Gems like these do not remain undiscovered for long in the tourism world so we recommend getting there before the secret is out. Both areas are accessed easily via Venice so we spent a few days there too for good measure! Read MoreAdVINEtures was fortunate enough to be invited by our friends at Town Hall Brands to a terrific Masterclass and tasting of the wines of Northern Italy’s Valpolicella Region. The event was produced by the Consorzio per la Tutela dei Vini Valpolicella, the association that represents more than 80% of the producers in the appellation. The Masterclass was very capably led by local sommelier and wine educator, Daenna Van Mulligen.
The day was divided into 3 parts: first, the Masterclass to inform us about Valpolicella, then a tasting of 11 wines from the region, and finally a walk about session to meet and taste with some of the region’s producers. This was a great way to get some real context about the region and to taste some of their wines.
Read MoreFriuli-Venezia Giulia is Italy’s foremost region for producing white wine.
Pronounced free-you-lee venn-eat-see-uh Julia, it is often referred to as simply Friuli for short. The region, located in the northeastern corner of the country is truly an undiscovered gem; a picturesque producer of world class wines sold at very fair prices and without the heavy tourism that seems to have taken over much of the wine world.
Read MoreWe were recently sent an article on a wine that is being sold for the astronomical price of USD$5,000 for the 2019 vintage. That’s right, not a special, rare collector’s vintage like 1961, 1947 or 1928. And not a name that gets top scores or terrific accolades from the wine cognoscenti. We decided to do a bit more research to find out just what this was all about.
Read MoreThe pedigree does not get much higher than Biserno, the latest creation of Marchese Lodovico Antinori. Lodovico formerly owned the elite of the Super-Tuscan wineries: Tenuta dell Ornellaia, makers of Ornellaia and Masseto. In 2002 he sold his interest to his partners the Mondavi-Frescobaldi Group. For the Biserno venture he has partnered with his brother, Marchese Piero Antinori, president of Marchesi Antinori, the winery that arguably created the Super-Tuscan brand with his ground-breaking Tignanello. So it was with considerable excitement that I happily accepted George Wong’s generous invitation to taste these wines at a small, gentlemen-only dinner party at George’s beautiful home.
