Domaine Weinbach

At the base of the imposing Schlossberg (Castle) Hill within the golden heart of Alsace, Domaine Weinbach is a winery named after a small river running through its property that has built a reputation as vast as the ocean for consistently producing some of the very best wines in the region.

Originally a monastery, Domaine Weinbach was built more than 400 years ago by  Capuchin monks who made wine there for a couple of hundred years before being evicted during the French Revolution.

And we think they are making some of the best wines in all of Alsace. Domaine Marcel Deiss (pronounced “dice”) was started in Bergheim, Alsace in northern France in 1947 after Marcel Deiss returned home from World War II. His family has been growing wine grapes in Alsace since 1744. Today the winery is in the hands of Marcel’s grandson Jean-Michel Deiss who is in turn assisted by his own son, Matthieu.

The charming village of Niedermorschwihr.

Approximately 8km from the town of Colmar along the 170km Vins d’Alsace (Alsace Wine Route) lies the town of Niedermorschwihr, a charming village that is home to a small number of wineries surrounded by a stunning tapestry of steep vineyards. There, along the main cobblestone street is where we were introduced to Domaine Justin Boxler, a family winery making wine since 1672 that was the most surprising revelation during our first visit to Alsace.
