club world

A glass of champagne is always a nice way to start a flight.

Travel has been a big part of my life since I was born. Before coming to Canada, the country of my citizenship, I lived in two countries in Europe and we travelled frequently around the continent. Back then flying was glamourous. When my mother or father would take us on flights, we dressed up as if attending a formal event. Captains and flight attendants had a pseudo-celebrity status and people sat up a little straighter and gazed in admiration as they walked by, immaculately dressed in their fresh-pressed uniforms. One of my earliest recollections as a child was flying on British Airways with my parents and being treated like royalty. In the 40+ years that have passed since then, the rise of low-cost carriers combined with increased security measures has made flying more chore than treat, and often more stressful than enjoyable. I recently had the opportunity to fly with BA again in their long-haul business class, Club World, which re-ignited fond memories and a feeling that maybe, just maybe, flying could still be a luxurious treat.

Air New Zealand Business Premier

In previous Wine High Club features, we’ve highlighted airlines including Air France, Air Canada and KLM who each consult with a well-known Sommelier or Master of Wine to help curate their business class wine lists. Air New Zealand has taken the focus on wine one step further by consulting with no less than 7 of New Zealand’s leading wine experts. On a recent flight from Los Angeles to Auckland, we were prepared to test whether their offering would end up being that much better than the competition…or if it would be a case of too many oenophiles in the cellar.

Canadians aren’t generally known to boast, but we’re lucky enough to have an airline that has been named North America’s Best Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 7 of the last 9 years (including the past 2 consecutive years), so we’re going to make an exception. On a long-haul trip from Vancouver to Sydney, we had the opportunity to see firsthand that the accolades are truly deserved.

Airline business class

A lovely start to our Air France journey.

For the second installment of our Wine High Club, we are reviewing Air France, partner of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, who we featured in the first article of the series. Together these two airlines make up one of the world’s largest carriers in terms of both revenue and passengers. You would think that being partners would mean similar offerings when it comes to food and wine, but we were delighted to discover they have each stayed true to their regions and celebrate what makes them undeniably unique.

Having travelled to more than 80 countries, it’s fair to say that we’ve had more than our share of in-flight experiences. While economy class inclusions seem to be declining, airlines are going out of their way to win business-class travellers. Today, lie-flat beds, in-flight entertainment, and in-flight dining are common among all international carriers, but it’s in the latter category where airlines seem to be trying to differentiate themselves. Our “Wine High Club” series aims to provide our readers with a review of what wine is being offered onboard different airlines. After all, if you’re going to be spending more than a few hours on a plane, it’s worth making it time well spent. First up in our series is Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij, also known as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, which we had the pleasure of flying from Vancouver to Amsterdam on our way to an AdVINEture in Bordeaux.
