My First Harvest Complete: Grit, Growth, and Gratitude

Posted on Oct 9, 2024

The Dream Team: Tracy, Brandon, Ally, Al, Chase & Andy.

As the final grapes are pressed and the last barrels tucked away, my harvest internship has officially come to a close. It’s hard to believe how much has been packed into these past 4 weeks — the early mornings, hot days, late nights, and everything in between. Physically, it was one of the toughest experiences I’ve ever gone through.

The long hours during harvest are legendary for a reason. There’s no stopping the process once it starts, and the grapes certainly don’t wait. But as I’ve come to realize, the physical side is only one part of the equation. What truly made this experience special was the people I shared it with.

Al Garcia keeping it fun.

In life, as in wine, it’s always about the people. And I was lucky enough to work with the very best. The camaraderie we built in the cellar is something I will carry with me forever. Every sorting table, every racking, and every seemingly endless cleaning session was made bearable, even enjoyable, by the incredible team at my side. We laughed when we could, sang along to whoever’s play list was on, encouraged each other when energy was running low, and found ways to make even the hardest tasks fun.

Aaron & Tracy Kendall.

What stood out to me most was the generosity of the winemakers. Despite the demands of harvest, Tracy and Aaron Kendall were always willing to pause, explain, and share their knowledge. Their passion for winemaking shone through in every conversation, and they were generous with insights into everything from vineyard management to the intricacies of fermentation. I came here wanting to learn, and I leave with more knowledge and inspiration than I ever could have imagined.

Spending a day at Résonance with winemaker Guillaume Large gave me the privilege of witnessing a completely different operation, offering me a full spectrum of experiences.

Harvest has been more than just an internship — it’s been a test of endurance, a masterclass in winemaking, and a testament to the power of working alongside passionate people. Though the days were long and the work was tough, I wouldn’t trade a single moment.

As I look back on this chapter, I’m filled with gratitude for the incredible team I had the privilege of working with—thank you Alvaro (Al), Brandon and Andy—the best cellar rat team a girl could ask for.

Grateful for the experience.

All signs suggest that this vintage is shaping up to be exceptional and distinctly “Oregonian.” Despite a late start to spring, the growing season wrapped up in ideal conditions, with warm, sun-drenched days promoting ripeness along with cool, crisp nights preserving acidity. This combination promises wines that are balanced, expressive, and true to Oregon’s signature style.

They say wine is a reflection of the people who make it, and if that’s true, this vintage is not only going to be excellent, but also bound to be something extraordinary.

Reading your experience, despite the tough, relentless work, your beautifully positive self shines through! Making a note in my calendar to purchase Folly of Man and Résonance 2024 wines the next time I’m in Oregon. We would love to taste their wines especially knowing you were part of making their 2024 a reality.

    • Likewise, I already respected winemakers, growers, and pickers but seeing everything in action firsthand took that to a whole new level!
