There are few things better than drinking great wine, and without question one of those things for us is drinking great wine while simultaneously contributing to a great cause. Next month the Auction of Washington Wines (AWW) will be hosting its annual charity event in Woodinville August 18th – 20th, and regardless of whether you’re a relative newcomer to wine, a wine enthusiast or full blown oenophile, it is definitely an experience not to be missed.
Read MoreConsistently one of our favourite Merlots and the 2005 lived up to our expectations and beyond. At 11 years old, it’s still dark red in colour showing only a slight fade at the rim. Tons of complexity with notes of black cherry, stewed plum, spice, and earth. This is a full bodied Merlot that is big and bold yet incredibly balanced and smooth with a very long finish. The classic description of an “iron fist in a velvet glove” pretty much sums it up.

Township 7 Winery is actually two wineries: one in Langley, BC and one in Naramata, in the Okanagan Valley. It opened its winery in Langley in 2001, just a year after the first grapes were planted. The original founders, Corey and Gwen Coleman were two University of Saskatchewan graduates (both B.Comms) who left the prairies to learn the wine business first-hand in the Okanagan. Corey worked at winemaking and sourcing grapes from local producers. Gwen was a marketing consultant who had several wineries as clients. They teamed up and headed down to the coast to start their own winery in Langley.
What do you get when you combine a passionate winemaker with a European education and a background in hospitality? A charming and unpretentious gathering place that makes and sells great wine. Welcome to City Side Winery, a new spot in Vancouver that is redefining the local wine scene.
Black cherries and baking spices infuse the aroma of this wine and fill it with power. With some time in the glass these are joined by subtle notes of herbs together with floral notes. This is a very structured wine: a full body is matched by tannins that continue to assert themselves a decade after the vintage. Intense flavours of blackberry, black cherry and plum get support from notes of mocha, allspice and a hint of leafiness. Everything here is dialed up but in proportion allowing the wine to carry its heft with good balance. Delicious now but years of life left. 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, all sourced from the Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, among the very top sites in Washington State.
