Our latest virtual winemaker interview is with the incredibly talented and engaging Scott & Marta Rich of Talisman Wine in Sonoma, California. Talisman is a small production winery that makes exclusively Pinot Noir from approximately 10 different vineyards throughout the region. We discovered their wines about 8 years ago at their charming tasting room in Glen Ellen (managed by the wonderful Amanda Lorren), and have been diehard fans ever since. In 2019, we interviewed Scott & Marta at Wildcat Vineyard which ended up being one of our most memorable interviews to date. In this virtual follow up, we talk about everything from the vineyards they work with, how the fires affected the 2020 vintage, how they’ve adapted to COVID, and their current release which marks their 25th vintage. On a recent trip to Sonoma, we had the opportunity to catch up with Bettina Sichel of Laurel Glen Vineyard. We first wrote about Laurel Glen two years ago, before the devasting fires of 2017. It was great to hear first-hand how Sonoma has recovered from one of the worst wildfires in the region’s history.
We’ve had more than our share of truly wonderful winemaker interviews and we’ve come to learn that great wine begins with great people. Recently we sat down in the middle of a vineyard (literally) over an entire afternoon with two of the very best: Scott & Marta Rich of Talisman Wine.
From respected winemaker Merry Edwards, this Russian River Valley offering is a perfect example of why this region in Sonoma has a world-class reputation for Pinot Noir. A very expressive wine with dark cherry and plum backed with secondary notes spice and earth. We had to double check the label that this was actually 11 years old! Still lots of structure and very fresh, making us think it still has a few years ahead of it. Great mouth feel and quite a long finish for a Pinot Noir.
St. Francis Winery and Vineyards has for a long time been on our list of favourite California wineries. We can still remember the 1996 St. Francis Reserve Merlot, the wine that tuned us on to St. Francis and the wine that turned us on to Merlot! The fruit-forward and beautifully textured style of that wine remains the house style today.
