Sitting along the banks of the river Yonne in the core of the Auxerrois region, Saint-Bris-le-Vineux is a charming village crafted from ancient stones. Beneath its surface lie remarkable medieval cellars that sprawl across 3.5 hectares, reaching a depth of 60 meters underground—truly exceptional examples within the region of Burgundy.
We were lucky enough to visit Domaine Bersan, where the family has been making wine there since the mid fifteenth century, and they have the cellar to prove it.

This series of articles will focus on the top wines from a number of Champagne Houses. In Champagne these top wines are referred to as that house’s “Tête de cuvée”. The Tête de Cuvée will be made from a strict selection of the best barrels from the best vineyard parcels. We toured Chateau La Couspaude (more commonly referred to simply as “Couspaude”) and tasted with members of the owners’ family as a part of a tour from Bordeaux to Rioja with Iberian Wine Tours. Couspaude is a Grand Cru Classé from the St. Emilion appellation in Bordeaux’ Right Bank. We toured their 200 year old winery, a gorgeous and authentic stone building, and the perfect place to learn all about a winery that is rich in history.

La Cité du Vin is housed in an ultra-modern building that is a glaring contrast to its historical backdrop of one of the most famous wine regions in the world.
