Unless you’re a resident of Washington State or a serious fan of Washington wine, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Woodinville. Located just a 20 minute drive north of Seattle, Woodinville is a small suburb that is home to more than 140 wineries and tasting rooms featuring wines predominantly made in the Walla Walla, Columbia and Yakima Valleys in the southeastern part of the state. And while wine is the reason we discovered this somewhat hidden gem, it’s the wine combined with the outstanding food, and genuine local hospitality that keeps us coming back.

If you’ve never heard of Bothell, it’s a 20 minute drive north of downtown Seattle, and also happens to sit right next door to Woodinville, home to many of Washington’s best winery tasting rooms. As a result of the growing demand for Washington wine, there is also a great need in the area for decent accommodation to support its burgeoning popularity.

The current estimates point to craft beer accounting for 10% of production by volume in the United States. On the West Coast, where the movement finds its stronghold, big craft brew cities like Portland, San Francisco and Seattle are estimated to have 20% market share going to the craft breweries. Elsewhere in the States, Boston and Denver are also seeing big support for the movement. The Brewer’s Association in the US has a goal of 20% market share by 2020 and is trumpeting the mantra “20 by 20”. Stats for Canada are a little harder to come by but by appearances we should be close. Certainly Vancouver has become another stronghold for craft brewing with, at last count, over 60 craft breweries in the metropolitan area.
