Opus Hotel – Musings on a unique & stylish stay

Posted on Oct 9, 2014

When you’re about to stay at the only boutique hotel in the city awarded the Forbes four-star rating, ranked one of the Top 5 trendiest hotels in the world by Tripadvisor and named a finalist for Best in the Northwest, you’re bound to come in with raised expectations. The Opus Hotel in Vancouver not only delivers on any preconceived notions, they lift those expectations to a whole new level, setting the bar for all future hotel stays.

While the term trendy can often invoke feelings of cool detachment, it’s the warmth and genuine care of the hotel staff that makes you believe this isn’t just the current flavour of the month. From the valet to the front desk, to the bartender and wait staff at La Pentola restaurant, you are made to feel entirely welcome and cared for.

At the heart of Opus is the vision of John Evans. Along with designer Robert Bailey they have put so much thought and detail into every inch of the property, you literally don’t want to blink in case you miss something. Step into one of two elevators and be prepared to have your stereotype of ‘elevator music’ shattered. A walk down the hallways proves a sensory delight with low lights, tasteful décor and a hint of the signature Opus scent wafting in the air. With each of the rooms featuring residential fabrics and carpeting, a full mini bar, HDTV, and an ipad, (some rooms even come with a Smartphone), your notion of a typical corporate chain property is quickly replaced with a stylish home away from home. Even the twice turn down service—a rarity even in the larger corporate chains nowadays—has its own twist on leaving a chocolate on your pillow opting instead for vintage candy (think Pop Rocks & super Blow Pops) and a carafe of water on your nightstand.

MikeExecSuiteThe culmination of this passion for design is highlighted by the Opus Hotel “Muses” – 5 distinct personalities that have inspired everything in each of the hotel’s 96 rooms from the décor to the room configuration, and even the pre-programmed playlists on the room’s ipad.  Mike is the doctor from New York and his 28 rooms emphasize a minimalist feel with neutral calming colours.

DeDe Signature SuiteSusan is the fashion executive mom of two from Toronto that loves Yoga. Her 27 rooms are stylish and sophisticated but still comfortable and practical. Billy, the UK rock star’s 21 rooms are hipster heaven presenting a grunge chic that in some room configurations feature a contemporary open-style bathroom overlooking Davie Street. Billy is complemented by Pierre, the food critic from Paris. His 16 rooms are a bright orange that reflect his vibrant curiosity on all things cultural—wine, jazz, history and architecture. And finally there is DEDE, the 2 Signature suites personifying pure Hollywood glam. She is an actress that defines the Diva personality—bold and dramatic she knows who she is and dares you to get to know her too.

A stay at the Opus Hotel is nothing short of excellent. As a seasoned traveller it’s not easy to find a place that has that rare combination of comfort AND style that has literally thought of everything so you don’t have to. So whether you imagine yourself an actress, a food critic, a rockstar, a doctor or fashion executive your Muse awaits.
