Wine Country Eats: Villa Morgan (Istria, Croatia)

Posted on Jun 5, 2024

One of Istria’s very best.

Our travels last year led us to Istria, Croatia. While our primary focus was on exploring the local wines, it was the vibrant culinary landscape that truly left a lasting impression. Istria, situated in the northernmost coastal region of Croatia, lies opposite Northern Italy across the Adriatic Sea. Croatia, like many nations in the region, emerged from the conflicts that characterized its history. Once a part of Yugoslavia, Croatia has been part of various neighboring countries over the years.

Croatia’s rich culinary scene reflects its complex history, with influences from its past associations evident in its top-tier restaurants, some of which boast Michelin stars. Among these dining establishments, Villa Morgan stands out as a memorable experience, located in a charmingly remote and picturesque setting.

Inside Villa Morgan.

The restaurant’s philosophy revolves around the rich bounty of local ingredients, paired with modern culinary techniques to create dishes that are both sophisticated and deeply rooted in the region’s traditional dishes.

Villa Morgan enjoys a stunning setting enveloped by lush vineyards and olive groves. The restaurant’s charming stone building, with its rustic yet elegant décor, perfectly complements the natural beauty of its surroundings. Guests can choose to dine indoors within the warm and welcoming interior, or outdoors on the spacious terrace which offers stunning views of the Istrian countryside. We opted for the latter and even on a misty spring day, the views didn’t disappoint.

Beautiful and delicious.

Morgan’s menu reflects their locavore philosophy, with dishes that celebrate the flavors of Istria while incorporating distinctly creative touches. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted to highlight the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients, resulting in a dining experience that is both visually appealing and deliciously satisfying.

The restaurant has earned a prestigious Michelin star and we’re not at all surprised. Its commitment to excellence, innovative approach to cuisine, and dedication to using the highest quality ingredients have all contributed to its reputation as one of the country’s very best. The Michelin Guide has praised Morgan Restaurant for its creative and flavorful dishes, impeccable service, and inviting ambiance, making it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts from around the world.

Our server Goran took excellent care of us.

Our experience at this family-owned and operated establishment unveiled exactly that: a team of passionate individuals dedicated to creating a memorable dining experience. The family’s love for Istria and its culinary traditions shines through in every aspect of the restaurant. That love combined with the family’s commitment to excellence have helped Morgan Restaurant earn its place as one of Istria’s most beloved culinary destinations.

Morgan Restaurant is a true culinary gem in the heart of Istria, offering a dining experience that is as memorable as it is delicious. We would recommend Morgan Restaurant without hesitation as an essential stop for anyone eager to savor the finest of Istrian cuisine.

Another fabulous Advineture! What a beautiful region and Villa Morgan sounds like a perfect respite for a delicious meal. This area across the Adriatic, does not get enough attention. I look forward to delving further into the region and its wines.

    • We were so impressed by all aspects, such a beautiful part of the world and still (relatively) undiscovered. As for the wines, the whites in particular were excellent and so under the radar so great value…for now!
