Champagne is the ultimate celebratory drink, the drink of toasts, of special occasions and in our book, one of the finest wines around. La Cité du Vin in Bordeaux.
Just over two years ago, a museum dedicated to wine opened amid much fanfare in Bordeaux, France. La Cité du Vin is housed in an ultra-modern building that is a glaring contrast to its historical backdrop of one of the most famous wine regions in the world. 2011 Avennia Gravura
One of our favourite new world Bordeaux blends, we have yet to have anything from Avennia that has disappointed. Made up of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot & 8% Cabernet Franc, it had a beautiful aroma from the moment we opened it with dark fruits dominating the nose backed with cedar and earthy notes. This is a powerful, full bodied wine with a silky smooth mouthfeel and lovely long finish.

A highlight of that conference was a presentation on El Dorado County put on by a number of their winemakers. That is where we met Justin Boeger, winemaker at Boeger Vineyards, as he poured his Barbera for the group and told us about his family winery. After that presentation we decided we had to check out El Dorado and definitely make a stop at Boeger Winery when we there.
