It takes vision to build a top winery, among a lot of other things. Paul McBride had that vision and is now turning out some of the very top wines in Washington State.
One of the early interviews we did at AdVINEtures was with Kit Singh, winemaker and proprietor of Lauren Ashton wines in Washington State. Unless you’re a resident of Washington State or a serious fan of Washington wine, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Woodinville. Located just a 20 minute drive north of Seattle, Woodinville is a small suburb that is home to more than 140 wineries and tasting rooms featuring wines predominantly made in the Walla Walla, Columbia and Yakima Valleys in the southeastern part of the state. And while wine is the reason we discovered this somewhat hidden gem, it’s the wine combined with the outstanding food, and genuine local hospitality that keeps us coming back.
2003 Woodward Canyon Estate Red Wine
Spectacular aromas of candied cherries, plums and baking spices hit your nose when it is well above the glass. After a bit of swirling, hints of vanilla come forward. Flavours of blackberries and plums get support and added complexity from the herbal notes which stay appropriately in the background. The mouth feel on this wine is positively decadent: rich, plush and deliciously smooth. The body is medium plus and the tannins are barely perceptible. Fully mature it is drinking brilliantly right now. 44% Cab Franc, 41% Merlot, 14% Cab Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot.
Extraordinary – Current release available at Marquis for $100 (taxes in)
