Washington Wine2003 Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon (Artist Series #12)

Right off the bat, this wine impressed with a magnificent nose of blackberry, cedar and a hint of spice. A full bodied wine with a smooth mouth feel, it had a wonderfully long finish. It showed everything AdVINEtures loves in a wine – balance, length, intensity, complexity and expressiveness. At 13 years old, it was only showing a slight fade at the rim and tannin was still present leading us to believe this could easily stay cellared another 5 years or more.

K Syrah 2006 Phil Lane2006 K Syrah Phil Lane

Dark red in appearance with aromas of cherry, blueberry and a touch of blackberry. A medium plus body with a very smooth, almost plush, soft mouthfeel. Drinking at its peak now, it is very balanced but lacks the structural components to age further. Not the Charles Smith monster Syrah, much more restrained than some of his more flamboyant efforts. The only knock on this wine is that it is a bit one dimensional, lacking complexity. It has a playing-it-safe element that keeps it from appealing to the intellect. Still, a very enjoyable, pleasure-driven wine.

Avennia – Wines with a Voice

We arrived at Avennia’s “facility” in Woodinville’s warehouse district, about 30 minutes drive north of Seattle. We use the word “facility” because it is not a tasting room, but a barrel room, winery, office and a little reception area where we tasted their wines. Avennia is not open to the public, but that does not stop them from selling out all of their wines via their mailing list along with wine specialty and high end grocery stores in the Northwest. (You can register on their mailing list here.) As the tasting notes that follow will show, this has become one of the rising stars on the Washington wine scene, producing wines of great finesse and intense flavours.
