After a night in Portland we headed to the Willamette Valley to interview Doug Tunnel of Brick House Vineyards and Wayne Bailey of Youngberg Hill Vineyards & Inn. We also experienced the provisions tasting at Soter Wines and stopped into Sokol Blosser for a tasting. Fall is our favourite time to visit any wine region and with harvest just completed, there was lots of activity and lots of optimism about the 2018 vintage. We are big fans of the wine coming out of Oregon and this latest trip solidified that the Willamette Valley truly deserved to be named Wine Region of the Year (Wine Enthusiast 2016)!
A good friend of ours in the wine industry suggested we meet for a drink at one of the Pacific Northwest’s newest, and hippest, tasting rooms during a recent visit to Seattle. We had been hearing the favourable buzz and were keen to try it ourselves and see what the Estates Wine Room was all about.
We are acutely aware how lucky we are to live on the West Coast. Living in this area provides unparalleled proximity to several world-class wine regions and we have been fortunate enough to have shared some very memorable experiences together. With Valentine’s Day looming, there are few things that pair better with romance than a great bottle of wine, particularly when shared over a great meal. Expand that date into a weekend away with a loved one and you’re virtually guaranteed to win his or her heart.
AdVINEtures has been fortunate enough to meet some of the world’s truly great winemakers. And while many people equate wine with a certain amount of snobbishness, our experience is that generally winemakers view themselves first as farmers and are among the most down to earth people you will ever meet. And you’ll be hard pressed to find a winemaker less pretentious then Rollin Soles of ROCO Winery.
To say we were surprised by what we found when we visited King Estate Winery at the southern end of the Willamette Valley would be a massive understatement. We suppose the name itself should have been a dead giveaway but as we drove from downtown Eugene via roads that took us through largely rural farmland, we were almost stopped in our tracks when we turned the last corner to see an enormous chateau sitting atop a hill surrounded by hundreds of acres of vines.
