British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley is going through a tremendous growth spurt, not just in the number of wineries there but in the quality of the entire experience. Vignerons have now got “old” vines in their vineyards, many 20 or more years old, and they are providing wineries with ever-better raw materials. Wineries in turn have upgraded equipment and are hiring experienced talent from across the globe to make or consult on the making of their wines. Tasting rooms are catering to luxury travelers’ wants and desires. And now the restaurant scene has joined the act providing some really terrific dining experiences. The Restaurant at Phantom Creek is leading the way.

His portfolio includes Flagship Mission Hill Family Estate, Checkmate Artisanal Winery (producer of Canada’s first 100-pt wine) and the ultra-premium Martin’s Lane. Right next door to the latter is CedarCreek Estate Winery, one of the Okanagan Valley’s ‘original 8’, and an excellent stop in its own right for any wine enthusiast.

The Cowichan Valley is a regional district in the southern part of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. We headed over from the mainland to the Island last year to explore its wine offerings after it was recently bestowed the Province’s designation as a sub-Geographical Indication (sub-GI). Of course, no AdVINEture would be complete without trying the local fare and despite our limited time and somewhat limited choices, we did find some worthy stops to recommend.
