Hot Off The Vine

Marimarpic2007 Marimar Estate Pinot Noir Cristina

Dark red with a little fade at the rim. Big nose of cherries, cranberries and earth. Medium to full body with red fruit flavours backed up with spices and earthiness. A terrific Pinot with seemingly many years to go.

2007 K Syrah Morrison Lane

KsyrahbottleThe 2007 K Syrah Morrison Lane is a big wine dominated by black fruits on the nose and palate combined with notes of leather and wood. Despite its boldness it is well balanced with an incredibly smooth, plush mouthfeel.  While this wine showed no signs of breaking down, it is drinking beautifully now so we’d recommend not waiting too long.

WCbottle2000 Woodward Canyon Artist Series (#9) Cabernet Sauvignon — Washington, USA

The 2000 Woodward Canyon Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon is yet another example of why we love this winery and its winemaking style. It’s a big, bold, complex wine, where the intensity is perfectly balanced and smooth with a very long finish. Dark red in colour, it was showing just the slightest age on the rim. Blackberry, black cherry and plum dominated the aroma while the flavour was a beautiful combination of fruit and wood with secondary notes of spice, earth and leather. Drinking brilliantly right now, it showed no sign of breaking down.

LeMesnillabelLe Mesnil Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs NV Champagne

100% Chardonnay all from Grand Cru vineyards within Mesnil-Sur-Oger. This cooperative of growers produces wine from some of the best Chardonnay terroir in all of Champagne. Pale gold with a fine bead. Highly aromatic with a strong bread dough character that gains support from notes of apple, lime, roasted almonds and a hint of caramel. The medium/full body palate offers up  a very dry expression of pears and toast that is nicely balanced by the richness of the texture. Delicious and a steal at the price (around $15 less than Veuve and the other big house NV Bruts and significantly higher quality, in our opinion).

2011 Chateau de Fesles Anjou La Chappelle Vieille Vignes
FeslesbottleRich gold in colour. The nose is very floral with a slightly wooly accent. Rich and full bodied, the palate brings forward flavours of apple, stone fruits and honey. There is a zingy acidity that keeps the wine fresh. We would love to try this wine in 5 years or so to see its ageing potential.

2002 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

QuilcedaCreekCab2000One of the greatest wines we have tasted. Big and brawny, but in exquisite balance. The nose is beautiful collection of red and black fruits that take you back they are so seductive. You need to pause before going back to the glass to get the fresh cedar notes that lie underneath. On the palate, blueberry, cassis and a slight woodsy note come together in a full body that is the classic joining of power and elegance. I frequently find myself without much good to say about wines this big. But this managed to stay light on its feet while it delivered up a terrific intensity of flavor. The finish went on for close to a minute. Exceptional! This wine, though 12 years after the vintage, came across as a youngster, and another decade and probably more surely exists in front of this amazing wine. If further complexity develops over the years, it could become perfect.

 Extraordinary
