French wine1998 Chateau Gazin Pomerol

Dark red in colour, the nose initially revealed a floral scent that was quickly replaced with lots of plum and cherry backed with an earthy component. This wine showed great complexity and balance but had a short finish and lacked the intensity we had expected. A very enjoyable and elegant wine however, if fell just short of being an overall excellent for us.

Very Good +

Washington Wine2006 Andrew Will Ciel du Cheval

Bright red cherry nose that is complimented by loads of baking spices. The cherry and spices carry on to the palate where they take on a lovely candied note. Lots of spicecake flavours are delivered in a medium/full body. The body is soft and round and coupled with those candied flavours it gives a plush and hedonistically delightful mouthfeel. This bottle is fully mature and drinking at peak now.

Washington Wine2005 DeLille Cellars Doyenne Syrah

Deep red/black in colour. Blackberry and black cherry are complimented with baking spice notes and vanilla on the highly expressive nose. The dark fruits carry on to the palate where they create a very intense flavor profile. Full bodied and still somewhat tannic, this is a powerful wine. But the balance here is very precise and tannin, fruit, alcohol and oak are all there and in equal measure so no aspect overpowers. A delicious expression of Syrah, powerful but smooth, one of the best the New World has to offer. Just entering maturity and could go up to a decade longer.

Pinot Noir2012 Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir

Despite being a relatively big and intense California Pinot, the 2012 Mount Eden is wonderfully balanced and still classically Pinot in every way—lots of red fruits, particularly raspberry & currant, backed up with notes of pepper and earth. Medium in body and acidity, it still has some time left to enjoy for a few years yet.

Australian Wine2012 Curly Flat Pinot Noir

An intense and very expressive wine, it showed a tremendous nose of floral and spice combined with a wonderful earthiness. Other than wanting the fruit to show a bit stronger, this wine has all of the components we love in a New World Pinot Noir.

Excellent – (Available at BC Liquor Stores for $50, plus taxes)

Gran Reserva 9041995 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904

At age 21 this wine is in great shape. Beautiful nose of strawberry, sweet tobacco and saddle leather with a slight floral component developing with air. Medium body, this has the silky mouthfeel of a Grand Cru Burgundy. The finish is long and juicy with a slight citrus note. Very complex with lots of earth, mineral and tobacco notes supporting the red fruit of cranberry, raspberry and cherry. Intensely flavoured, this is absolutely delicious.
