Bordeaux wine

The private tasting room at Mouton Rothschild.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild (often simply referred to as “Mouton”) is truly one of the world’s greatest wine estates. It is relatively rare but sought after by collectors all over the world which has resulted in very high prices upon release, that over time can increase in multiples as wealthy connoisseurs chase the opportunity to have a bottle. We were very privileged to taste this wine and hear its amazing story at the winery as a part of an exclusive wine trip with Iberian Wine Tours.

World Business class

A glass of the Nicolas Fuelliatte Champagne.

Having travelled to more than 80 countries, it’s fair to say that we’ve had more than our share of in-flight experiences. While economy class inclusions seem to be declining, airlines are going out of their way to win business-class travellers. Today, lie-flat beds, in-flight entertainment, and in-flight dining are common among all international carriers, but it’s in the latter category where airlines seem to be trying to differentiate themselves. Our “Wine High Club” series aims to provide our readers with a review of what wine is being offered onboard different airlines. After all, if you’re going to be spending more than a few hours on a plane, it’s worth making it time well spent. First up in our series is Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij, also known as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, which we had the pleasure of flying from Vancouver to Amsterdam on our way to an AdVINEture in Bordeaux.

El Dorado county wine

Tasting at Boeger Winery.

There are many great joys of the wine world and one of those is making a new discovery. For us at AdVINEtures, one of our better recent discoveries has been El Dorado County, just outside of Sacramento, California. We were first introduced to this gem of a wine region at the Wine Bloggers Conference 2017. A highlight of that conference was a presentation on El Dorado County put on by a number of their winemakers. That is where we met Justin Boeger, winemaker at Boeger Vineyards, as he poured his Barbera for the group and told us about his family winery. After that presentation we decided we had to check out El Dorado and definitely make a stop at Boeger Winery when we there.

Pichon baron wineryIn the 1860’s, Phylloxera, a tiny plant louse, hit Bordeaux hard and virtually all of the vineyards in the region were ruined. Desperate not to lose their wine entirely, Bordeaux winemakers travelled to Rioja and invested heavily in the region in order to continue making wine until a solution could be found. Our trip with Iberian Wine Tours followed this “phylloxera trail” and what we experienced was a journey filled with terrific wine, culinary delights, and a lifetime of experiences we won’t soon forget.

Bordeaux: A Primer

Bordeaux: A Primer

Bordeaux FranceWhen people think of the wine world and ask where the best wines come from, they will no doubt receive many answers. Since there are many different tastes, a variety of answers is proper. Certainly Bordeaux would receive numerous mentions. Bordeaux, as a region, not only produces some of the greatest wines in the world, it also produces a large portion of wine in the world. It was one of the first regions to produce wine on a commercial scale and the techniques that its vignerons and winemakers have developed have been very influential to growers and vintners around the world.

Welcome to our very first VIDEO AdVINEture! Come with us as we explore El Dorado County in Northern California. We visited wineries that included a small hands-on winery with just the winemakers as employees, an urban winery, and a larger production winery that has been in the family for over a hundred years. Join us on our very first VIDEO AdVINEture and let us know what you think!

Cheers!
