We were recently sent an article on a wine that is being sold for the astronomical price of USD$5,000 for the 2019 vintage. That’s right, not a special, rare collector’s vintage like 1961, 1947 or 1928. And not a name that gets top scores or terrific accolades from the wine cognoscenti. We decided to do a bit more research to find out just what this was all about.
Earlier this year AdVINEtures was asked to help some very generous friends put together a list of wines to have at a very special, intimate gathering at a local restaurant. We were given just a theme to guide us in our selections: choose wines that will be the best wines the guests will have in their lives. It was a pretty daunting task, but we couldn’t resist so…challenge accepted.
We’re very excited to announce that AdVINEtures is now a monthly contributor to the Daily Hive, a Canadian-born online news source established in 2008, that delivers top-tier information to its audience in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, Edmonton, Seattle, and Portland. Here’s the link to our debut article: 8 bucket-list wineries you need to visit in Canada. Cheers!
Unless you’re a resident of Washington state or a serious fan of Washington wine, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Woodinville. Located just a 20 minute drive north of Seattle, it’s a small suburb that is home to more than 130 wineries and tasting rooms featuring wines made in the Walla Walla, Columbia, and Yakima Valleys. Here’s a glimpse of a few of our favourite places to sip and taste in Woodinville featuring: Avennia Wine, Lauren Ashton Cellars, Orr Wines, Delille Cellars, the Herbfarm, the Barking Frog, Brian Carter Cellars Long Shadows, McQueen Champagne Bar, Maryhill Winery, and Chateau Ste. Michelle:
We first met Erica Orr in 2018 while doing a story on Washington’s Baer Winery located in Woodinville’s warehouse district. She was (and still is) their consulting winemaker and has also consulted for Mark Ryan Winery, Sparkman Cellars, and Guardian Cellars. At the time, she was producing one wine under her own label which was a Chenin Blanc. We tasted the 2017 together with several Baer Wines and the entire lineup was terrific. Her Chenin was a particular standout being such a rare variety found in Washington, and the quality with every one of the wines we tasted was indisputable. We knew immediately that she was a winemaker to watch.
A recent trip to Woodinville, Washington gave us the opportunity to catch up with Chris Peterson, winemaker and co-founder at Avennia Wine. Joining Chris was Thomas Woodley, Avennia’s National Sales Director. It was a great opportunity to hear first-hand what is going on within the Washington wine scene from two people who have been an important part of that scene for the past two decades. It was also a chance to taste the current vintages of Avennia’s terrific line up of wines.
