Every year on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is recognized globally as a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

The theme for 2023 is: “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.” With so many challenges facing the wine industry that touch on this theme, we reached out to some of our favourite women in wine worldwide to get their perspective on the state of the industry and what advice they’d give to women looking for a career in wine.
Stepping into the very modern tasting room at Maison Joseph Cattin, you’d likely never guess that the winery has been around for more than 300 years. But from the first sip of their Crémant d’Alsace, you’ll quickly understand that no further proof is required to convince you of their legacy as one of Alsace’s best known producers.
Approximately 8km from the town of Colmar along the 170km Vins d’Alsace (Alsace Wine Route) lies the town of Niedermorschwihr, a charming village that is home to a small number of wineries surrounded by a stunning tapestry of steep vineyards. There, along the main cobblestone street is where we were introduced to Domaine Justin Boxler, a family winery making wine since 1672 that was the most surprising revelation during our first visit to Alsace.
Alsace is a gem of a wine region, well-known to sommeliers and the wine cognoscenti, but not yet well appreciated by the general public. The region makes some terrific wine, has a delicious gastronomy and is a stunning region visually. Alsace resides in north-eastern France sharing a border with both Germany and Switzerland. The key geographic features of this small, 15,000 hectare region are the Rhine River and the Vosges Mountains.
Despite many people telling us that Alsace was a beautiful region to visit, it was still surprising just how impressive it is to see in person. Charming villages enveloped by steep vineyards, passionate winemakers, and world-class wines await! In business, it’s generally understood that not adapting to changing circumstances will generally lead to a company’s demise.
