Veuve Clicquot’s 1996 La Grand Dame Champagne

As we discussed in our article on Champagne, there are a wide variety of different Champagnes to choose from. Since Champagne is THE wine of celebrations, which Champagne does one choose for those really special celebrations? When that milestone birthday or anniversary comes around or when you accomplish a major lifetime event and you want to go all out and really celebrate the occasion, this is when you pull out your Tête de Cuvée.

Woodinville washington

A glass of Goose Ridge Rose by the fire.

Located just a 20 minute drive north of Seattle, Woodinville is a small suburb that is home to more than 140 wineries and tasting rooms featuring wines predominantly made in the Walla Walla, Columbia and Yakima Valleys in the southeastern part of the state. With that many tasting rooms to choose from it can be daunting to know which ones to make a priority especially when faced with a short amount of time. We recently visited the Goose Ridge Estate Vineyard & Winery tasting room and found it to be well worth a stop for anyone looking for a delicious glass of wine in a comfortable atmosphere.

st estephe french bordeaux wine1996 Cos d’Estournel

We had big expectations for this wine and it didn’t disappoint. It took some time to open up to the point that when first opened, we were worried it might be off. After a two hour decant it started to sing! Dark red in colour, it’s a very complex wine revealing notes of plum, cherry, blackberry, earth and tobacco. A lovely textured mouth feel with a very nice long finish. Still seems to have time but we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ribera del duero spain2004 Pesquera Reserva

Medium dark red colour. Beautiful nose of raspberries and black cherries supported by hints of baking spices. The medium+ body is textured and very smooth. The tannin is now fully integrated and the moderate acidity on the back end keeps the wine nicely delineated. This wine is very complex with primary flavours of plum, raspberry and blackberry. With a bit of air we also pick up leather and cedar notes. The fruit is ripe and full, possessing a slightly confectured note and is drinking perfectly right now. One of the best examples of a Ribera del Duero from a top vintage.

Napa Valley wine2000 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

A wonderfully complex Cab. Funky herbal nose upon opening which was replaced by aromas of blackcurrant, plum, eucalyptus and dusty earth notes once exposed to air in the decanter. Big and smooth with a nice long finish, this wine is showing terrific structure that at 17 years still has plenty of time.
